report of the observarium on how lasu can be improved

INTRODUCTOIN
The Observarium as an institution registered with the Students Affairs Department of Lagos State University, with the aim of providing a platform in which solutions are proffered to problems facing the youths, our environment and the society at large.
Having recognized that the youths are the vital force of any society, the Observarium as an institution deems it a pertinent issue to call for change in the activities of both individuals and the government, after identifying that several young minds out there have wasted their time and God’s given talents on frivolities, illegal and criminal acts.  However, in order to reverse all the happenings in our society, we as individuals have come together to put our resources to achieve an egalitarian society because we believe in the saying that in every endeavor, “It is not what we don’t have that limits us rather, what we have and do not know how to make effective use of” and “The greatest tragedy of life is what dies inside of man while he lives” that is, his abilities, aspirations and dreams.

MISSION OF THE OBSERVARIUM
Creating a culture of success and positive leadership among the youth of the world, most especially our dear nation Nigeria.

VISION OF THE OBSERVARIUM
Empowering young people to maximize their potentials by creating access to knowledge and inspiring the human mind to attain greater and possible heights with integrity.

A BETTER LASU IS POSSIBLE

Having recognized the need to have a qualitative and quantitative atmosphere capable of inspiring and motivating students and lecturers alike, the Observarium embarked on fact finding solution to the issues or factors militating against this trend in Lagos State University.  Hence, the initiative of A BETTER LASU IS POSSIBLE became the offspring of this laudable project.

It is no gain saying that in order for student to actualize their potentials and for lecturers to give their optimum best, it is trite for the school management to provide an absolutely conducive environment cum facilities capable of achieving this goal which will be in perfect molacrum with the standards set by United Nations Education Scientific Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

AIMS:

1)      To identify the problems facing Lagos State University

2)      Meeting with necessary quarters to discuss identified problems.

3)      To analyze the problems and formulate a sustainable and formidable solution.

4)      To make a comprehensive reports on the identified problems and solutions

5)      To dispatch the reports to necessary quarters

In order to actualize the afore-mentioned aims, the committee embarked on a visibility study of Lagos State University as a whole.  The research was aimed at identifying the immediate and actual needs of students and lecturers, providing or recommending solutions to curb the menace which has eaten deep into the fabrics of Lagos State University.

The study has been divided into 4 sectors with each having sub-headings.  They are:

1)      Administrative instability

2)      Infrastructural inadequacies

3)      Academic somersault and inefficiency

4)      Insufficient and inadequate hostel facilities

ADMINISTRATIVE INSTABILITY

Administrative instability in Lagos State University can be viewed from two perspectives, namely:

1)      Insensitivity to the plight of academic staff

2)      Relationship with non-teaching staff

The problem of administration in LASU is a major issue of concern as it encapsulates the entire system.

The decision taken in this important cadre in any system affects the smooth running and effectiveness of other segments.  It is important to point out that our lecturers are not well equipped to deliver their optimum to the students.

Academic staff should be encouraged to acquire more skills and experience to add to the experience they have.

Lecturers should be sponsored to seminars, conferences in established universities to enrich their knowledge.  However, salaries and emoluments should be improved as this will embolden them to deliver effectively.

The non-teaching staff’s welfare cannot also be overlooked as they constitute major block in the workforce of Lagos State University.  Efforts should be made to improve their output and effectiveness through constant meetings with the staffs and sponsoring some on study leave, in other, to meet the need of our ever dynamic society.

They should be given a sense of responsibility and be made to realize their role is evolving a better LASU in the 21st century.

In conclusion, the school authority and the government must ensure they are encouraged and adequately rewarded to make them effective.  And also, the ineptitudeness of the non-academic staff in all quarters should be checked and properly curbed.

INFRASTRUCTURAL INADEQUACIES

-      Lecture halls

-      Libraries

-      Administrative blocks

The state of infrastructures in LASU cannot be overlooked as no serious action has been taken in recent years to reverse this trend by the successive administrations in LASU.

Without prejudice to the recent effort made by the Lagos State Government to give the school an upliftment through the construction of buildings, lecture halls, and the repairs of the existing ones etc.  We however feel that there is still much to be done.

Presently, the school has a general library that is incapable of serving one third of the students.  This no doubt has fallen short of the acceptable educational standards as it reduces student’s effort to make research on their academic related activities.

In other universities, there are departmental libraries or faculty libraries which are of higher class and standard both in structure and materials compared to our own main library.  It will be of great importance to point out that a widely known university in Nigeria has a 3-storey building used for a departmental library (Biochemistry OAU).  This of course is a contradiction to what we have here in LASU where Fatiu Akesode Ademola library is supposed to be a resource center for over 7,001 Lasuites.  This trend must be checked and solution provided thereto.

HEALTH CENTER

The health center in Lagos State University provides immediate medical attention to students and staff alike. Managed by doctors and well trained nurses, the health center in all honesty has been there to attend to the medical challenges of students and lecturers.

While we commend the role of this establishment in giving us a disease-free university environment through series of services initiated programmes, we beg to state that one of the most intriguing challenge is the availability and administration of drugs to the university community.

It is already a known trend amongst the students that the health center lacks the necessary drugs to ameliorate the users’ health.  A statistics carried out by the Observarium shows that 8 out of every 10 students needing medical attention are always told to get one or two drugs themselves as they are not available at the center.  The drugs happen to be most time the most important for the ailing patient to make use of as much known malaria drugs such as Artesunate, Lonart, Qualtem and others are known to be unavailable whenever the need to make use of them arises.

Majority of the students now believe the only thing the health center could offer is paracetamol and vitamin C which are potent but peripheral drugs. This worrisome situation however should not be so as students pay for the maintenance and sustenance of the medical centre whether they use it or not. Therefore, we do not expect or accept to be told to ask out for drugs when the monetary values of the services ought to be rendered effectively have been adequately paid for.

This should be looked into as it is capable of eroding the students’ dilapidated confidence in the health center. The need to upgrade the facilities and administrative leakages at the health center should be considered of utmost importance as it will be deleterious to put the personal well being of more than 71,000 students at stake.  Health they say is wealth; this should be actualized in our health center.

ACADEMIC INEFFECTIVENESS

-      ICT problems

-      Students’ profile

-      Releasing of results

-      Lecturers

-      Issuance of ID cards

ICT center in Lagos State University is required to provide information and communication in the school environment, coupled with other activities being given to it by the school authority, such as providing students profile and computing of results.

The problems with this center have been the issue of computing result and releasing of profiles. The last profile released happen to be one of the disastrous ever as there were different cases of fraudulent misrepresentations of grades in the profile as well as omission of courses that were been offered by the students.  For those that were included, the score computed were at variance with the result pasted by the lecturers in charge of courses at both departmental and faculty levels.

To correct the anomaly, the students were told to inform the lecturers of their missing results in order to enable the correction of such cases by the ICT.

We stand to correct this state by saying that it is not the duty of the students to go around looking for their results after they might have read and sat for such examinations.  This attitude and its re-occurrence by the ICT are highly dangerous and capable of affecting the psychological balance of the students as some were even told to re-write the papers.

The inefficiency and ineffectiveness of the ICT Center to respond to the needs of the students must be looked into and effort to correct them must be taken.  Profiles should not only be accurate but should be released on time.

One major problem with this sector is also the late issuance of student ID CARD, and in some cases some don’t get at all, this trend must however be looked into in other to serve as a means of identification within and outside the school premises.

INSUFFICIENT AND INADEQUATE HOSTEL FACILITIES

Lagos state university and its environs no doubt is non-residential over the years due to security reasons which has been a major challenge facing Lagos State University. LASU became a partial residential campus with some interventions, but partially for female students alone, the lasu female hostel is now a tale of discomfort for resident of the hostel.

LASU female hostel, a three storey building, located on the main campus of Lagos

State University Ojo was built in the year 2001 and officially opened with a ceremony on Saturday 7th July 2001. This ceremony was attended by the former governor of Lagos state, Senator Bola Tinubu but the hostel was shut down due to the state of the school then according to our findings, LASU was not safe for students as a result of the high rate of cultism in the school, it was not advisable for students to reside in school until 2008 when cultism was curbed to some extent, the school management officially opened the hostel for females only.

LASU’s female hostel accommodates less than  quarter of the female students in LASU as it has 45 rooms with a bathroom and toilet in each of the rooms, these rooms were being occupied by 4 or 6 students, each student paying N50,000 per session, each floor has its laundry and kitchen where student wash and cook.  In 2011, 6 man’s room were turned into 10 man’s room, this made the hostel congested thereby inconveniencing the students, but so far, power and water supply has being fair to students as they can be assured of water and power supply for 20hours in a day except for weekends which reasons has not being given for such actions. They also have male and female porters who take care of student affairs in the hostel, other staff include the carpenter, plumber and electrician who helps in repairing damages in the hostel.

One of the major problems faced by resident of the school hostel is the fact that transportation system is unavailable to convey students to their various department/faculties as the hostel is located at the far end of the school and also, the hostel is congested as mentioned earlier in this report that more occupants have being accommodated to “six man’s rooms” even the clinic has been turned into a room. This is simply because more students need a place to lay their heads and limited space is available for them. This trend is not acceptable as it is known that even hostels outside the school premises can’t go for N50, 000 to be paid by an individual per session, however the school hostel should be a saving grace for students. As students endeavor to pay this amount, hence they must get the service for their pay.

It is in concurrence with this that we urge the school management to address these issues and make changes to them so that A LASU BETTER LASU CAN BE POSSIBLE.

Having analyzed the general problem affecting Lagos State University, it is however important to identify and analyze the peculiar problem facing each faculty in the institution.  Having identified the major problems encountered by Lagos State University to be infrastructural inadequacies, student and lecturer relationship, information gap between students and the management, it is important to break them down as they affect the students in their various facilities. There are 10 faculties in Lagos State University.  They are:

Faculty of Law

Faculty of Education

Faculty of Engineering

Faculty of Sciences

Faculty of Social Sciences

Faculty of Art

Faculty of Management Sciences

School of Communication

College of Medicine

School of Transport

It is now pertinent to elucidate more on the problems faced in each faculty.

FACULTY OF LAW

Faculty of Law, Lagos State University is said to be the most prestigious faculty in Nigeria but when it comes to infrastructural facilities, administrative capabilities and the lecturer-student relationship, the prestigious label becomes subjective. Faculty of Law though outstanding in terms of performance of students both on campus and at the Nigerian Law School, efforts need be complemented through the provisions of conducive and hygienic environment to aid students study.

The issue of lecturers is of importance because it got to us that few of the lecturers respond to the demands of student considering the technicality of the course; it was observed that the faculty is short of good hands in terms of lecturing.  It got to us that a lecturer has to take more than two courses due to lack of capable hands.

Lecturers in this faculty should be made to get themselves equipped in other to give their all when it comes to lecturing which will foster effective communication.

The infrastructural facilities in Faculty of Law could still be rated above that of other faculties even though, is still not of standard.  Public address system are not available to enhance effective lecturing, considering that lecturers have to shout on top of their voices and students needs to strain their ears before they can understand or hear what the lecturer is saying which frustrates the effort of the students.  It is also noticed that the common room needs to be properly furnished and recreational facilities put in place to help the students ease stress after classes.

The environment is unhygienic considering the last time the university environment was fumigated, students complain of mosquito bites in the faculty.

RECOMMENDATIONS

-      Appointment of more lecturers, most especially professors and Doctorate holders in other to facilitate the re-accreditation process.

-      Ensure a constant supervision of lecturers in other to facilitate a hitch free academic session at all time.

-      Provision of recreational facilities.

-      Ensure the provision of P.A.S. more importantly the introduction of a wireless mic, attached to the ear and mouth, for free mobility of the lecturers.

-      Faculty library though under construction should be furnished and shelved with standard text books of both local and foreign authors to meet the demand of the ever dynamic profession.

-      Collection of up-to-date law reports both local and international, law journals both local and international, and international and local research work on any aspect of law in other to ensure a standard law library that will be appreciated by student and lecturers to enhance their various research works.

-      Internship training for students at the end of all academic session, in other to facilitate more learning on what law entails.

-      Swift repair of damaged furniture.

-      Constant fumigation, considering the nature of the environment in which LASU is sited.

-      Though the student, lecturer relationship is cordial but more effort should be made to strengthen the relationship.

FACULTY OF EDUCATION

Faculty of education, Lagos State University is known to be the mother of all faculties in LASU.  The faculty has five (5) departments and has suffered a lot of setback considering the fact that the faculty does not have a building of its own.  It is disheartening to see that the building used by the faculty was built with the money contributed by the sandwich students of this great institution.

The faculty lacks a lot of things considering that almost all the courses have an education aspect of it. Some of the problems faced in the faculty include infrastructural activities, students-lecturers relationship, laboratories, public address system to enhance good communication in lecture halls, recreational faculties, hygienic and conducive learning environment.

The infrastructural state of this faculty is nothing to write home about considering the number of departments in the faculty. The lecture halls are not adequate as most of the lecture halls have been turned to conference room and the likes.

The other lecture hall used by the faculty when the 2 lecture rooms in the supposed building is occupied is the 3 in 1 lecture hall which is presently in a state of despair and not in any form conducive for students to receive lectures.

The student-lecturer relationship as gathered is not cordial because students relayed their experiences of hostile relationship between lecturers themselves let alone students.

Recreational facilities are not available as no common room is provided and places where students could relax are not in place.  Instead they are found loitering around the corridor. We found out in our research that the only place the students create for themselves to catch their fun and do some transaction was closed down some months back due to the LASU space allocation committee, alleging that the traders there are illegal.

The environment like any other faculty is unhygienic due to the negligence of prompt fumigation process.

RECOMMENDATIONS

-      A standard building should be erected for the Faculty of Education that can accommodate the number of students in the faculty.

-      Building of faculty of education library to enhance swift and continuous learning and research by students and lecturers alike.

-      Hygienic and conducive learning environment through constant fumigation of the faculty environment.

-      Foster a cordial relationship and unfettered access to lecturers by students.

-      Provision of other lecture halls to complement the over crowded halls in which student receive lectures.

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING

The faculty of engineering is one of the faculties in Lagos State University that is sited outside the main campus which is in Epe.

The faculty which comprises of 3 (three) departments lacks lot of things as observed by this committee.

These problems cut across epileptic power supply, infrastructural inadequacies, untreated water due to failure to wash tanks, unhygienic learning environment considering the fact that the areas are not fumigated regularly, distance of library to classes and inaccessibility of laboratories to carry out research without the presence of lecturers, the irresponsiveness of the department of works when called upon by students on the state of infrastructure which includes lecture halls and hostels.

The faculty of engineering although was said to have undergone some upgrading few months back, it was observed that the faculty is still begging for attention considering the requirement of engineering faculty.

However, engineering students who had their first year in the main campus are hoping  for a better plan as to reduce their shuttle in and out from Epe to Ojo as they are made to re-write exams most of them do not necessarily fail but due to some reasons unknown to them.

RECOMMENDATIONS

-      There should be provisions for 100 level students to run their first year in Epe Campus and lecturers provided to take them the necessary courses so as to reduce the stress faced by students after their first year.

-      Provision of constant power supply and standby generator or some other means of generating power e.g. solar.

-      Access to laboratories by students should be unfettered and unflinching considering the nature of the course but students should be placed under supervision by the laboratory attendants.

-      Swift responsiveness of department of works to the call of the students.

-      Fostering of cordial relationship between students, lecturers and non-teaching staffs.

-      Fumigation of the campus at intervals to create a conducive and hygienic learning environment for both students and lecturers.

-      More equipment should be provided in the laboratories to meet with the standard of NUC and to expose the students and lecturers to new discovery.

-      Provision of recent engineering text books, both by local and international authors in other to widen the knowledge of the students.

FACULTY OF SCIENCES

There are peculiar problems associated to each faculty in Lagos state University.  To the faculty of sciences amongst others are inadequacy of lecture halls, insufficient apparatus, chemicals and electricity to carry out practical, unavailability of multi-media on lecture hall to mention a few.

Students in the faculty of Sciences, receives lectures in laboratories which are meant for experiments and carry out extensive research on what they have been taught in class.  Painful enough, when students are free, there is no place to hang around.  Either it is raining or sunny there is no abode to hide their heads or relax till the next lecture apart from loitering around corridors.

Another problem is the inadequacy of lecture hall and the unavailability of multi-media equipment such as projectors to display what the lecturer is teaching in other to aid easy understanding.  Instead, everything is said verbally and theoretically.

One of the strong departments in the faculty is Biochemistry and lots of problems are being faced by this strong arm.  One of which is the fact that there are no radiant in the laboratories and that the students are made to provide themselves with most of the things needed during practical.  For instance, the power generating plant used in their laboratory was bought by the students.

The Zoology students are not left out.  It is only the good crammers that excel in the department as they have nothing to see for themselves than to cram what the lecturer have said in class to pass exams.  There is no zoo or anything visible to help the students in their course of study. The department of microbiology is not left out as students are expected to get all animals and apparatus needed for practical as nothing is available for students to experiment. This trend is a recurring phenomenon, which must be looked into.

Administratively, the faculty still has a long way to go as most times there are clashes in timetable without solution.  Some lectures which are not slated on the time-table are fixed without any consideration for the students.

However, the infrastructural inadequacy has lot of effects on the students as most times they are made to stand for hours during lecture and some even found outside on the corridor find it very difficult to comprehend what the lecturer is saying.

One of the students of biochemistry department said “we talk about cells and we have never seen one”.  The unavailability of everything we need will make us half-baked and deny us the ability to compete with the outside world.  Or what do you expect from a good crammer.”

RECOMMENDATIONS

-      Provision of necessary laboratory apparatus that will aid their practical

-      Recreational facilities

-      Provision of adequate infrastructural facilities most especially lecture hall and multi-media such as projector, public address system etc.

-      Fostering cordial relationship between students and lecturers

-      Providing a faculty library with books that are up to date to help the students and lecturers in their research work.

-      Industrial training (IT) of students should be enhanced by the school management.

FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES

One could image how joyous the students were when they were told that their faculty building has been completed.  Their hopes were raised to the peak with the thinking that they were moving to comfort their zone.  But unfortunately, it was dashed when they moved into the building and found out that there were more offices than lecture rooms.

The case of infrastructure has always been a peculiar problem to all faculties in this great institution.  One cannot even tell where the problem lies.  It is disheartening to see that after waiting for a long time, the problem faced by the students still remain unchanged.

We discovered that there are no sufficient lecture halls in this faculty.  Sometimes, lectures are rescheduled just because there are no available lecture halls at the stipulated time.  However, when the students are through with lectures, they are found hanging around either on the corridor or staircase because there is no relaxation center/spots provided for them.

This often times, have cause distractions for those who are receiving lectures because they are found looking outside when lecture is going on.

Also, lecturers have to shout on top of their voices in classrooms because there is no public address system to aid teaching.  Students who sit at the back during lecture finds it very difficult to ear what the lecturer is saying making his/her coming to class for that day a waste.  It is surprising to see however, that a faculty as big as Social Sciences does not have any hygienic toilets and students are found at the back of the building whenever they want to ease themselves.

It is also important to note that students find it very difficult to excel not because they don’t know or understand what they are being taught but because there is no smooth relationship between them (students) and the lecturers.  This over the years has remain a peculiar problem in this faculty as students cannot approach their lecturers when they need help.  They die in isolation trying to look for answers to problems that arise.  This however has contributed to the alarming rate of failure in this faculty.

RECOMMENDATIONS

-      The faculty needs another building to complement the building been used presently.

-      The administrative instability should be looked into

-      Foster cordial relationship between lecturers and students

-      To encourage interactions among students by providing recreational facilities or relaxation spots.

FACULTY OF ART

The Faculty of Art Lagos State University is made up of seven (7) departments and they are: Departments of African Languages, Yoruba and Communication Art, History and International Relations, Philosophy, English, Theatre Art and Music, Foreign Languages, Religions.

Like any other faculty in Lagos State University, the peculiar problem to these departments is infrastructure.  Other problems include communication, administrative instability and inadequacy of learning facilities.

The inadequacy of infrastructure has over time been the major problem in this faculty.  It is important to note that Faculty of Art has just 3 buildings expected to be used by 7 departments.  One can imagine the level of inconvenience faced by both students and lecturers.  Often times, lectures are re-scheduled to due unavailability of classes at stipulated time.   It is disheartening to see that Faculty of Art can only boost of 9 classrooms and 1 lecture hall.  This to a large extent shows the pace at which lecture to go in lecturing students.

However, the rooms available either lack maintenance or are not well equipped.  Students most times are found hanging around during lecture and the unlucky ones are left with no other option than to stand at the door step or corridor which makes it impossible to hear what the lecturer is saying.

One will think that the academic excellence portrayed by the students should be in credit of the students’ ability to access the library but reverse is the case as only 10% out of 50% who are academically sound are found going to the library.  They often complain that the books in the library are not up to date or that they cannot find the books they need.

It is often said that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.  The unavailability of relaxation center/relaxation spots have resulted to causing a set back in interaction among students.  It is important to note that a sound or excellent students should be able to cut  in all areas be it academically, socially, intellectually and in relations to other people, but how can this be achieved when the necessary facilities are not in place.

Another problem faced by the students in this faculty is the information gap between the students and management.  The major complain of the students is the fact that these non-teaching staffs pay little or no attention to them which ends up causing various problems for them.  Some of which include registration, identification cards, results and receipts.

RECOMMENDATIONS

-      Provision of standard infrastructural facilities that will aid learning

-      Provision of recreation facilities to encourage interaction among students.

-       A thorough investigation of the complaints made by students towards the attitude of non-teaching staffs.

FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES

The Faculty of Management Sciences, Lagos State University has been recorded to have the largest population in this institution.  In the course of our research, we were able to deduce that in the last three (3) sessions, that is 2008, 2009, 2010, the population of the faculty increased with at least 5,000 students per session.  The memo passed in 2008 stated that there are about 9,000 students in the faculty which in the following year increased to 15,000 and now have increased to about 20,000 students.  Nobody will have the guts to question the management about the population if proper preparation is been made for the students and those to be admitted.

Other problems apart from the population include infrastructural inadequacy, lecturers-students relationship, and unavailability of learning facilities.

Having analyzed the population of students in the faculty, it is necessary to bring it froth that the building provided in this faculty cannot accommodate the number of students.

In the course of our research, we found out that there are more offices than lecture rooms in the building.  The lecture rooms are often crowded during lecture which is neither proper nor hygienic.  Lecturers have to shout on top of their voices in order to pass their message across to the class.  Students most times refuse to go to class because they cannot afford to stand throughout lecture.  They prefer to make photocopies of notes which they had very difficult to understand when preparing for exams.

Also, the rate of failure recorded every year or after each semester is unimaginable and most times lecturers have to upgrade marks in other to meet the school requirement.  The only way this could be avoided is when the necessary facilities are put in place one of which include library.

During the course of our research, we found that the executive of Faculty of Management Sciences at a time created for themselves a library which today have been converted into offices. This is to tell us that as much as the students of this faculty would like to create a conducive environment for themselves, their effort is been frustrated by the administrators.

Another thing wished by the students is the reality of having a cordial relationship between themselves and their lecturers.  This is to show how bad it is and makes one to wonder how the students will meet the school’s expectation when the lecturers are not making things any easy for them.  The lecturers are not there when they need them and they tend to keep anything bothering them to themselves which at the end affects their performance.

RECOMMENDATIONS

-      More classrooms/lecture halls should be provided.

-      A conducive learning environment should be encouraged by providing the necessary facilities.

-      Encourage interaction among students by providing recreational facilities

-      Foster smooth relationship between the students and lecturers.

SCHOOL OF COMMUNICATION

Over the years, there have been some external campuses for various courses which have been relocated outside the main campus.  One of which is Adebola Adegunwa School of Communication.  This school of communication campus has been in Surulere from the beginning until recently when the 100 and 200 level students of this school were brought to the main campus.

Knowing fully well that students of mass communication are to be trained to be very useful in terms of writing and speaking (broadcasting and news writing), the training should be adequate and effective which means there must be adequate infrastructure and some other things in place.

Adebola Adegunwa School of Communication has a studio that is not put into use or less for decorating purpose and a camouflage.  It is not well equipped and this does not look like the right step to take in training future broadcasters, journalists or writers.  The course is based on practical’s and without a fully equipped studio and other training grounds, there won’t be sound training and the students will graduate without good skills because such students would not be able to function well in the media and will be forced to quit.

The Surulere campus was said to be inadequate when it comes to accommodating the students’ population and the need to get for them a convenient place arose.  This we could say was a very good idea as the 100 and 200 levels students were brought down to the main campus leaving the 300 and 400 level students at Surulere.  But unfortunately, the 100 and 200 level students of the School of Communication were brought down to Ojo Campus without adequate preparation for them.

A visible example was the way in which the school was run last semester because three weeks into the first semester, the students did not have any lecture due to the absence of lecturers.  This is because the lecturers had to come down from Surulere to Ojo just to lecture them.  They had no administrative offices; staff offices and most especially lecture halls.  Just about the third week, the former sociology class was converted to the mass communication lecture hall.  One could imagine how the management expects the 100 and 200 level students to make use of just one lecture hall at the same time.

Another problems faced by the students is the issue of library.  The Fatiu Akesode Ademola Library expected to be used by all the students of Lagos State University does not have anything for the mass communication students making it impossible for the students to use the library.

RECOMMENDATIONS

-      A new building should be erected for the faculty (Adebola Adegunwa School of Communication).

-      The building should be equipped with the necessary facilities that will help the students develop a good skill in their various fields.

-      The library should be equipped with books on communication to help the students in their courses.

COLLEGE OF MEDICINE

No doubt this college is the major focus of the Fashola administration looking at the way students are catered for with all necessary things, both infrastructural and the recreational facilities.  Hostels are well equipped and lecturers are well catered for, the question posed thus: what is the hope of their counterparts in other faculties or are they inferior to those at the College of Medicine?

It is hoped and believed that the government and the management will reciprocate the unending development being carried out in the college to other faculties in Lagos State University.

The College of Medicine prima facie is serene and conducive for students; in terms of the environment, in which students are encouraged with the level of facilities and the friendship structure between lecturers and the students.

RECOMMENDATION

-      It is hoped that more is still expected in the college in terms of facilities needed to carry out effective operations.

SCHOOL OF TRANSPORTATION

This faculty might not have any problems due to the fact that it is a newly introduced course into the system and students are few in number, but the peculiar problem to this faculty still remains the unhygienic environment in which the faculty is situated.  It is hoped that the school management will have to admit students according to the capacity of the faculty.

RECOMMEDATIONS

-      Constant fumigation to provide a conducive and hygienic learning environment.

-      Foster a constant road experience to bridge the gap between the theoretical and the practical aspect of their area of study.

-      At all long break, the state government should make sure students are sent out to manage various transportation sectors in other to facilitate efficiency of transport system both in Lagos State and in Nigeria.

OUR RESPONSIBILITY AS STUDENT

In other to achieve A BETTER LASU, we as students must be ready to abide by the laws that govern the CITADEL OF LEARNING OF OURS, in a bid to achieve the series of recommendations it is not only the responsibility of the government, the school management, neither is it the responsibility of the student union government alone it our collective responsibility. Has it is said that every endeavour is achieved through team work “Even Don Quixote Had Panza”.

Greatest Nigerian student, Greatest lasuites, it is our task to be responsible, it’s our task to be patriotic, it’s our task to be an exponent of change. It’s our civic responsibility to demand for our right within a serene and peaceful atmosphere.

The task ahead is great; we must endeavour to strive towards achieving an egalitarian society for ourselves and generations to come.

Having done a thorough research and comprehensive reports on the general problem affecting Lagos State University and the major problem faced by each faculty, it is important to make a general recommendation giving our own views on how the identified problems can be solved because we have stated earlier that our mission is not just to identify the problems affecting Lagos State University as an institution but to also proffer the possible solution to those problems in other to create a culture of success.

In other to combat all the problems facing this great institution, the following steps must be taken:

-      New buildings should be erected to compliment the old ones.

-      Conducive learning environment should be encouraged by putting in place the necessary facilities

-      Interaction amongst students should also be encouraged by putting in place recreational facilities to help students relax after lectures.

-      A hygienic environment should be encouraged through constant fumigation of the environment.
